Molly Wichman, personal trainer in Lee's Summit, shares health and wellness tips for fitness & health. Today it is what Moms Really Want for Mother's Day!
When people think about Mother’s Day, they often think flowers, jewelry, candles, or gifts wrapped with pretty bows. And while those things are thoughtful, most moms are craving something much deeper. Think about building memories, not tangible gifts and see what happens!
What moms truly want is to feel seen. Appreciated. Loved. Supported. Rested.
Being a mom is beautiful, but it’s also mentally, emotionally, and physically demanding. Many moms spend their days pouring into everyone else’s cup while quietly running on empty themselves. This Mother’s Day, instead of focusing only on tangible gifts, think about how you can help fill Mom’s cup from the inside out.
Here are a few meaningful ways to make Mother’s Day truly special this year.
1. Give Her Quality Time
More than anything, moms want connection.
Not distracted time. Not rushed time. Real, intentional quality time.
Put the phones away. Slow down. Be present.
Maybe it’s a family walk, sitting on the patio with coffee, playing games together, or simply having uninterrupted conversations. Quality time reminds Mom that she matters not just for what she does, but for who she is.
Sometimes the greatest gift is simply feeling loved and connected.
2. Ask Mom What She Wants

This sounds simple, but it’s one of the most meaningful things you can do.
Instead of assuming what Mom wants for the day, ask her:
“What would make you feel most loved today?”
“What would fill your cup right now?”
“How do you want to spend Mother’s Day?”
Maybe she wants a slow morning and quiet time alone. Maybe she wants adventure and laughter. Maybe she wants everyone together around the table.
Giving Mom permission to choose what she needs is a gift in itself.
3. Plan a Fun Activity
Mom-ing can easily become routine. A fun experience creates memories and joy that last far beyond the day itself.
Think about something Mom genuinely enjoys:
A family picnic
A hike or nature walk
A painting class
Mini golf or bowling
A trip to the farmers market
A beach or lake day
A backyard movie night
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating moments where Mom gets to laugh, relax, and simply enjoy being with the people she loves.
4. Include Something Relaxing
Moms are constantly “on.” Their minds rarely stop.
A relaxing activity can help her reset mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Think wellness over obligation:
Let her sleep in
Give her uninterrupted quiet time
Book a massage or spa treatment
Set up a cozy bath with candles and music
Encourage her to read while everyone else handles the chores
Create a peaceful morning with coffee and no responsibilities
Rest is not selfish. Rest is necessary.
One of the most loving things you can give Mom is space to breathe.
5. Think About Her Favorite Things
The little details matter.
What makes her feel like herself outside of being “Mom”?
Maybe it’s:
Her favorite coffee
Fresh flowers
A playlist of songs she loves
Breakfast from her favorite café
A walk through her favorite bookstore
Her favorite dessert
Watching her favorite movie together
Thoughtfulness says, “I notice you. I know what you love.”
And that means more than expensive gifts ever could.
6. You Do the Cooking (or Make the Reservation)

One thing many moms don’t want on Mother’s Day? More work.
Give her a true break from the mental load by handling the meals for the day.
Cook breakfast. Grill dinner. Clean the kitchen afterward without being asked.
Or better yet, make a reservation somewhere she’s been wanting to try. Let her enjoy the experience without planning, prepping, organizing, or cleaning up.
Feeling cared for is one of the greatest forms of appreciation.
Mother’s Day Is About Filling Mom’s Cup
At the heart of it all, moms want to feel valued—not just for what they do, but for who they are.
The best Mother’s Day gifts are often the ones you can’t wrap:
Presence
Rest
Thoughtfulness
Connection
Support
Love
This year, focus less on buying more things and more on creating moments that nourish Mom from the inside out.
Because a filled-up mom is a healthier, happier, more joyful mom—and she deserves that every single day. Think about building memories, not tangible gifts and see what happens!
